This is a genuine orthoceras
fossil from Morocco. Orthoceras first appeared about 505 million years ago. Orthoceras were marine
animals that lived in the sea. They were similar to the modern squid with cone shaped shells. They were active swimmers in warm, shallow seas that moved about by squirting water out of the body cavity. They ate small animals and some grew to be 6 feet long. In the fossilized remains of the
shell, you can often see different chambers where the animal lived. Each genuine orthoceras fossil comes in a clear plastic snap case so it can be taken out and examined. They are polished on both sides and are approx. 2 x 1/2 inches and 1/4 inch thick. Information about orthoceras is on the back of the case. The case is 2 x 1.5 x 3/4 inches. These specimens will interest anyone who collects rocks, minerals, and fossils.
